As Microsoft officially ends support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, organizations and individuals who are unable to transition to Windows 11 can utilize the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to maintain critical security updates. EASICOMM is prepared to assist businesses in navigating this transition and ensuring the continued security of their Windows 10 environment.

Understanding Windows 10 ESU Licensing

The ESU program offers a paid subscription service providing "critical" and "important" security updates for up to three years after the end-of-support date. While the program is available to both commercial and individual users, the licensing structure and pricing differ significantly.

For commercial organizations, the ESU program is available through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Program and, starting September 1, through Cloud Service Providers (CSPs). The cost for commercial users begins at $61 per device for the first year, doubling each subsequent year. Importantly, ESU licenses are cumulative, meaning organizations must purchase Year 1 before Year 2, and so on.

For consumers, Microsoft has introduced flexible options, including a one-time payment of $30 for one year of ESU coverage, as well as free alternatives such as syncing PC settings via Windows Backup or redeeming Microsoft Rewards points.

EASICOMM’s Commitment to ESU Deployment

EASICOMM recognizes the complexities involved in managing the end of life for Windows 10. As the ESU distribution opens this fall, EASICOMM is committed to providing comprehensive support to ensure a smooth and secure deployment for our clients.

Our services will cover:

  • Provisioning and License Management: We will assist in acquiring and provisioning the necessary ESU licenses, including managing the activation keys and ensuring compliance with Microsoft's licensing requirements.

  • Contract Setup and Onboarding: EASICOMM will guide you through the ESU contract setup process, streamlining the onboarding for ESU deployment.

  • Deployment and Support: We are equipped to deploy ESU keys in commercial environments, ensuring that your Windows 10 devices continue to receive essential security updates without disruption.

The Importance of Continued Security

When an operating system reaches its end-of-support date, Microsoft ceases to provide security patches and updates. This leaves the system vulnerable to new exploits and malware. While Windows 10 devices will still function after October 2025, they will become increasingly susceptible to security risks over time.

The ESU program is designed to mitigate these risks by providing "critical" and "important" security updates as defined by the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC). This ensures that enrolled devices continue to receive protection against known vulnerabilities, allowing users to safely operate their Windows 10 PCs for up to three additional years.

ESU Options for Consumers and Businesses

Microsoft has introduced various ESU enrollment options to cater to different user groups:

  • Commercial Organizations: Businesses can purchase ESU licenses through the Microsoft Volume Licensing Program. The cost is cumulative, starting at $61 per device for the first year and doubling each subsequent year.

  • Consumers: For the first time, Microsoft is offering ESU options for personal use. Consumers can choose a one-time purchase of $30 for one year of ESU coverage.

Additionally, Microsoft has introduced flexible options for consumers to obtain ESU coverage for free for one year:

  • Windows Backup: Users who sync their PC settings to the cloud via Windows Backup can enroll in the ESU program at no additional cost.

  • Microsoft Rewards: Users can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to receive one year of ESU coverage.

What ESU Does (and Doesn't) Include

It is important to understand that the ESU program provides only security updates. It does not offer:

  • New features or product enhancements

  • Non-security bug fixes or quality updates

  • Technical support (except for issues related to the ESU installation itself)

For businesses and individuals who must continue using Windows 10 past the end-of-support date, enrolling in the ESU program is a necessary step to maintain a secure computing environment.

EASICOMM is ready to help organizations evaluate their options, whether that involves migrating to Windows 11 or utilizing the ESU program, and implement the necessary solutions to protect their systems.
